so after drawing out some of my ideas and being indecisive as usual...i decided to make a change in my concept yet again. in thinking of old and new i thought more about the relationship between those two words and then about relationships that people have with one another. with that, i came up with the concept of "fusion." i feel that this word ties in my ideas for this building and my desire for this building to be mindful of connections of old and new while appreciating the different aspects of a relationship and the ways that different things can become complimentary through small gestures.

In the beginning phases of my brainstorming for the hatchery, I had a very narrow minded approach that centered around the idea of an egg hatching and the anatomy of an egg. After thinking more about the hatchery and what it was, outside of the branding, I expanded my thought process and thought about the projects we had done previously this semester.
Initially, one of my favorite parts of the hatchery was the historic aspect of the building and I immediately began to think of how the fixtures of the space would compliment the shell of the building. I appreciate its historical value and think it will only add to the aesthetics of the space. In thinking of these relationships of not only the interior of the hatchery but with the city of Greensboro and Elm Street I began to brainstorm with the idea that my concept for the hatchery would be “connections.” Although, I felt as though it covered a lot of my ideas my mind kept coming back to the idea of new and old. I felt that this concept not only touched on the historical aspect of the building but also dealt with connections.
Finally having my concept, I researched the connections between new and old through inspirational images and architecture. After compiling a good deal of information and images I have come to the conclusion that a key component to my design will be transitions and the incorporation of used fixtures and furniture.

UVa art museum.

This university art museum caught my eye because I feel as though it held similar values to that of the hatchery. Although student artwork isn’t the main feature of this space, the museum strives to include students in a way that will spark artistic interest in even the most indifferent of people. I appreciate the including their entire campus, not just the students that have majors dealing directly with the contents of the museum. The museum features opportunities for students to work with artists on a personal level, lectures, and exhibitions. This particular place may not be where we are directed with the hatchery but I feel as though it has core foundations that should be instilled within our own project.

In thinking about the relevancy of the hatchery in terms of UNCG I immediately thought Ashley’s idea of providing a space where students have a chance to display and sell their artwork. I have always loved the small boutiques that house nothing but works from local jewelry designers and artists. With that, I found this store, “Simply Everything Boutique” and I think it embraced the hatchery’s main purpose. This small space is an art/gift gallery in Illinois. It sells and displays the work of local artists while also providing a space for them to come and personally showcase. This boutique stresses its ever changing merchandise and I feel that this will be a key to the hatchery’s success and bringing the public back again and again.

An exhibition store that turned the idea of pop up retail into something more permanent. I found this idea to be so interesting because of its spontaneously driven background. Vacant opens for one month only in “vacant” areas within major cities and with showcase exclusive products from popular brands as well as budding designers. I think that this idea of constant change, not necessarily moving from place to place, will be something that keeps the hatchery as a point of interest among the Greensboro community for years to come.

In researching pop-up retail more, I found these pacific dome structures that the Metropolis Mall in Indiana has used as temporary structure for stores that has been a “huge attraction for customers.” This design tactic reminds me that regardless of where the hatchery is, constant bursts of new life within the larger structure are vital to it’s success. Consumers may always return to the Metropolis Mall for staple items but the installation and removal of different aspects throughout time will contribute to its everlasting success.

This coffee shop stresses community interaction and really keeps the consumers priorities as their number one priority. I feel that this mentality is important for the hatchery when trying to make this something that reaches not only the campus of UNCG but the community of Greensboro and beyond. The hatchery has the potential to make a huge impact on our surrounding areas and a large part of that will be due to our ability to consider every demographic.

This retail store intrigued me because of its concept, “a magical fantasy store about ‘little black creatures with dual personas’ that live in a derelict City of Oil and Steel.” This concept is displayed all over the store with their graphics, display tables, and all of this is complimented by their garments and accessories. This concept is a far cry from that of the hatchery but I appreciated the loyalty they had to their concept. The store is aimed towards teenage girls which is clearly marked and not only is the merchandise fun but the store seamlessly supports that idea. The hatchery will be a fun place to view exhibitions, artwork, and employ artists and this should be reflected in its design.

This converted Victorian warehouse includes 3 restaurants which are simple but beautiful and bring a creative focus to their food. These restaurants pay homage to legendary designers and movements. These restaurants remind me that the hatchery is a blank canvas that can be transformed to suit the needs of this gallery perfectly.

This event space and modern art gallery initially grabbed my attention because of its literal comparison to the hatchery. I loved the exposed brick walls and the large and small scale displays. Their concept of tying together the past and the present is something that I feel would be beneficial to the hatchery. This space has many historical touches that would only be complimented by the new work of students. To lose the history of the building would be a disservice to the gallery and gives new opportunities to bring the community into the space.

This bookstore focused on display which is a vital aspect of the hatchery being that it is a gallery which will house pieces from many disciplines. The façade is a series of bookshelves that pivot and I remember Ashley briefly mentioning a skylight that stretched from the first floor to the third which I thought of as another display opportunity after viewing this bookstore.

When completing the concept of this store the designer took the clothing brand as its main inspiration. A line of simple clothing with clean lines was where the design for this store began. The display of the clothing reflects the high end feeling of the space and when dealing with the hatchery I think it is important to think about how we want this gallery to be perceived. After viewing this store it is clear to me that display has an enormous effect on the feeling that a patron will get from being in it.

visiting anthropologie gave me so much insight to the world of retail design. i drew a lot from our trip there as to how i would make the salvation army select feel special in its own right. one thing i loved was their idea of using little touches on their merchandise to just give it that unique touch. i think that doing that would not only draw the consumer to look more closely at the products but also to make each item feel different and not just like a used item of clothing. i also think it is important to emphasize that everything in the store is different and no two things are alike. i think that would help people focus more on the fact that they are getting something that is unlike that of anything anyone else in the store is purchasing, instead of the idea that its used. i also loved how anthropologie created their displays throughout the store, i know a ton of people that don’t like neccessarily like anthropologies clothing but know them for their interesting and creative display tactics that are unique to their stores.

so this weekend i went for a long walk, read a book in my bed, went shopping at different kinds of stores, and bought fresh flowers.

i thought about what i love to do and what i love about stores when i go shopping. [wandering. catchy displays. relaxing.] these are what gave me inspiration for the new salvation army select.

this design is meant to show time through the seasons. following my idea of the "laboratory" i decided to think of equipment that is often used in one. the obvious choice was a set of viles and i thought it would be appropriate to display the minerals for the makeup in. being that this is a store meant for designing your own make up and perfumes i thought that this would get that point across. the color of the minerals displayed in the viles would change by the seasons and i felt that would be a good inidcation of time when dealing with make up and the changing colors that people wear throughout the seasons.

when thinking about make up and time i started to think about evolution. throughout time, make up has had many different phases and color palettes. the idea of phases went well with my concept of mitosis and i thought it would be interesting throughout each room to witness change whether it be throughout time or just the transformation of a naked face slowly getting makeup added on to it.

for this design i wanted to mimic the look of a clock without actually having it be a functional timepiece. to do so i decided to once again go with the use of lab equipment and display it like the 4 main times displayed on a clock, filling each one to its respective time. and again i would fill each beaker with different colors that coordinated with whatever season it happened to be.

the textures are smooth and many of the display tables look like black acrylic or lacquer. the colors are all black or white with accents of silver and red throughout. the lighting is appropriate for a retail store but is a bit dimmer which gives the store a more intimate, warmer feeling. without the obvious name of the store, it is clear that they are selling all black and white, by not only the merchandise but also the colors of all of the accenting tables and displays. the materials are consistent and the way that they've designed the stores really speaks for itself.

this store has a really industrial/warehouse-y look. many of the materials are wood and metal. i appreciate how even when it comes to the smallest details they have good representation of what they are selling, like the handles to the doors as a customer is entering. there are high ceilings and many windows which give a great, open feeling. the fact that they are able to have such great branding even though the store is so large is really great. their consistent with their textures and materials throughout the store which i feel ties it all together successfully.

this is one of my favorite stores simply because of how amazing their stores are, design wise. their signature colors, pink and orange and carried throughout the store in polka dots and merchandise. but aside from these colors, the store is splashed with tons of bright colors. the walls are all white but the store has no lack of color what-so-ever. these bright colors promote a fun atmosphere and the idea that they are a party and gift store. the materials are pretty constant throughout and the merchandise itself acts as textures for the store. i really like how they don't rely completely on the decoration of their stores for their branding but also the merchandise itself. if the store didn't have a sign in front i could walk in and easily identify this store.

this store has great branding and although no two stores are exactly alike i love how they all read as an urban outfitters. their display tactics for their clothing is creative and different from any other store. as you can see in the second picture they don't just hang their clothing on racks. they even hung some of their featured items in large picture frames. the furniture that they display their clothing on is always interesting and never the same throughout the store. a lot of their textures are smooth but the materials vary overall. some tables have glass tops while others seem to be like a white acrylic, there are some wood pieces, and a lot of metal. their lighting is mainly halogen but they accent those with large chandeliers across the store which adds a lot of personality.

i think that this stores design compliments the clothing that they are selling and the brand that they want to portray. the lighting is pretty low and there are spotlights towards the clothing on display, above the racks that surround the perimeter of the back of the store. the colors are warm and the textures are smooth and some reflective. much of the furniture are dark woods and the dressing rooms have a thick tapestry-like curtain instead of a door. they also sell accessories and small home decor. the overall effect of this store is very eclectic and represents what their brand perfectly.

these images inspired me for a lighting project that we had, mostly i appreciate the lighting that came from the natural and living objects because the colors that emitted from them was just as powerful as the electrical lighting.

I thought this spread was well designed because you see that the company wants to come across as graceful and classy and its almost as if they're trying to show you the feeling that you will get from using their product. They accomplished this through the the way they reprsented the girls dress as light and flowy as well as the graceful position they put her in.

I feel like this advertisement was successful because they make the girl more prominent then the product which supports their idea of "having a room be living" because it shows that the product does not interfere but only compliments the way we do things daily.

I liked this ad because it shows that off the fact that a sneaker company helped them create a normal stylish shoe with all the qualities of a sneaker hidden within by showing a normal person doing something athletic in what appears to be everyday shoes.
