the hatchery: precedent study

This university art museum caught my eye because I feel as though it held similar values to that of the hatchery. Although student artwork isn’t the main feature of this space, the museum strives to include students in a way that will spark artistic interest in even the most indifferent of people. I appreciate the including their entire campus, not just the students that have majors dealing directly with the contents of the museum. The museum features opportunities for students to work with artists on a personal level, lectures, and exhibitions. This particular place may not be where we are directed with the hatchery but I feel as though it has core foundations that should be instilled within our own project.

In thinking about the relevancy of the hatchery in terms of UNCG I immediately thought Ashley’s idea of providing a space where students have a chance to display and sell their artwork. I have always loved the small boutiques that house nothing but works from local jewelry designers and artists. With that, I found this store, “Simply Everything Boutique” and I think it embraced the hatchery’s main purpose. This small space is an art/gift gallery in Illinois. It sells and displays the work of local artists while also providing a space for them to come and personally showcase. This boutique stresses its ever changing merchandise and I feel that this will be a key to the hatchery’s success and bringing the public back again and again.

An exhibition store that turned the idea of pop up retail into something more permanent. I found this idea to be so interesting because of its spontaneously driven background. Vacant opens for one month only in “vacant” areas within major cities and with showcase exclusive products from popular brands as well as budding designers. I think that this idea of constant change, not necessarily moving from place to place, will be something that keeps the hatchery as a point of interest among the Greensboro community for years to come.

In researching pop-up retail more, I found these pacific dome structures that the Metropolis Mall in Indiana has used as temporary structure for stores that has been a “huge attraction for customers.” This design tactic reminds me that regardless of where the hatchery is, constant bursts of new life within the larger structure are vital to it’s success. Consumers may always return to the Metropolis Mall for staple items but the installation and removal of different aspects throughout time will contribute to its everlasting success.

This coffee shop stresses community interaction and really keeps the consumers priorities as their number one priority. I feel that this mentality is important for the hatchery when trying to make this something that reaches not only the campus of UNCG but the community of Greensboro and beyond. The hatchery has the potential to make a huge impact on our surrounding areas and a large part of that will be due to our ability to consider every demographic.

This retail store intrigued me because of its concept, “a magical fantasy store about ‘little black creatures with dual personas’ that live in a derelict City of Oil and Steel.” This concept is displayed all over the store with their graphics, display tables, and all of this is complimented by their garments and accessories. This concept is a far cry from that of the hatchery but I appreciated the loyalty they had to their concept. The store is aimed towards teenage girls which is clearly marked and not only is the merchandise fun but the store seamlessly supports that idea. The hatchery will be a fun place to view exhibitions, artwork, and employ artists and this should be reflected in its design.

This converted Victorian warehouse includes 3 restaurants which are simple but beautiful and bring a creative focus to their food. These restaurants pay homage to legendary designers and movements. These restaurants remind me that the hatchery is a blank canvas that can be transformed to suit the needs of this gallery perfectly.

This event space and modern art gallery initially grabbed my attention because of its literal comparison to the hatchery. I loved the exposed brick walls and the large and small scale displays. Their concept of tying together the past and the present is something that I feel would be beneficial to the hatchery. This space has many historical touches that would only be complimented by the new work of students. To lose the history of the building would be a disservice to the gallery and gives new opportunities to bring the community into the space.

This bookstore focused on display which is a vital aspect of the hatchery being that it is a gallery which will house pieces from many disciplines. The façade is a series of bookshelves that pivot and I remember Ashley briefly mentioning a skylight that stretched from the first floor to the third which I thought of as another display opportunity after viewing this bookstore.

When completing the concept of this store the designer took the clothing brand as its main inspiration. A line of simple clothing with clean lines was where the design for this store began. The display of the clothing reflects the high end feeling of the space and when dealing with the hatchery I think it is important to think about how we want this gallery to be perceived. After viewing this store it is clear to me that display has an enormous effect on the feeling that a patron will get from being in it.
